When did you become a volunteer & when did you decide to join Arcola?
Volunteering is extremely important to my wife and I. We have volunteered in our communities for years. I joined Arcola VFD in June of 2019.
Why did you become a volunteer & Why did you join Arcola?
This is the third fire department I volunteered for over my 39-year career in the fire service. I wanted to join Arcola VFD because it is my way of giving back to my community and stay connected with the fire service.
What positions in the department have you held? What have you learned from them?
I currently serve as an administrative volunteer. I learn something new every day. Specifically, I am learning about the governing body, how the VFD operates within Loudoun County and VA overall. Also, I am working with the leaders of the organization to understand the finances for AVFD through the review and update of their policies and procedures.
With which committees or projects have you been involved, and what have you learned from them?
I am involved in updating the By-laws and serve on the finance committee. I am quickly learning about how they are funded, procure, and report financially to Loudoun County and the Commonwealth of VA.
Were you mentored? Have you been a mentor? If so, tell us about that experience.
I was mentored years ago, however now I am looking to mentor the volunteers so they can take over leadership positions with Arcola VFD in the future. It is important for me to prepare for our future.
What was/is your “day job”?
I am currently the program director for the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. I oversee a program that accredits fire departments internationally.
What community involvement do you have outside the department?
I currently volunteer for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation as the national director for all of their fundraising golf tournaments. I also volunteer through my church and for other pop up community events.
How do you feel your service has enriched your life/your family’s life?
I/we love to give back to the communities we live in. It makes us feel part of the community and we get to know new people as well.
What would you say to someone today who is interested in joining the fire and rescue service? Would you advise them to join Arcola and Why?
I would always encourage them to join and give back. There are so many needs at a volunteer organization that you do not just have to fight fire or respond to calls. There is a purpose for all types, shapes, sizes, and job expertises.
