When did you become a volunteer & when did you decide to join Arcola (if different)? I joined Arcola VFD in January 2018
Why did you become a volunteer & Why did you join Arcola? I have a family background and heavy interest in Civil Service (military and first responders). After being designated as medically ineligible for military service, this was the next logical step
What positions in the department have you held? What have you learned from them? I have been working as a Firefighter/EMT and have learned a lot of the realities of this brotherhood. I have found a rewarding job that I genuinely look forward to going to.
With which committees or projects have you been involved, and what have you learned from them? N/A
Were you mentored? Have you been a mentor? If so, tell us about that experience. I was mentored throughout my probationary time as a firefighter, and I found that experience enlightening.
What was/is your “day job”? Government contractor
What community involvement do you have outside the department? Involved at my kids’ elementary school
How do you feel your service has enriched your life/your family’s life? My kids are super enthusiastic about my role as a firefighter, to the point that they brag about it to their friends. I’m glad I get to lead by example in showing them the importance of service to community and country, as others in my family have done.
What would you say to someone today who is interested in joining the fire and rescue service? Would you advise them to join Arcola and Why? This job involves long hours and hard work. It will challenge you, sometimes scare you and make you learn a lot about yourself. But this is by far the most rewarding job I have ever held, and I have found an extended family in this department.
