We always are looking for individuals who are committed to making a difference in the community. If you feel you have what it takes to meet the challenges of our business, we’d very much like to talk to you. Prior EMS or firefighting experience is not required.
For those with a desire to support our operations who do not wish to participate in emergency care in the field, we offer administrative membership. Administrative members provide much of the behind-the-scenes work that keep our operations going, and we are eager for you to get involved.
All applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and are subject to a full background investigation. With the exception of the EMS junior member program, applicants must be at least 18 years of age by their membership start date.
Types of Memberships
Operational
Operational members respond to emergencies and include Emergency Medical Technicians, Firefighters, and Emergency Vehicle Drivers. Members stay overnight at the station to provide coverage on their assigned shifts which run from 6pm to 6am.
Support Services
Support Services members include Support Services Technicians and Emergency Vehicle Drivers. They respond to large emergency incidents and special events to provide support needed to keep the other first responders operating for extended periods of time. Support Services members remain at home for their duty shifts and respond to the station as needed.
Administrative
Administrative members provide non-emergency services that support the daily operations of the department, including activites such as events planning, volunteer recruitment, building and equipment maintenance, and many other activities.

Individuals interested in becoming an AVFD member are encouraged to attend our monthly Public Interest Meeting, held at 7:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month.
During the meeting, prospective members will receive an overview of the membership process, anticipated timelines, training requirements, responsibilities, and expectations associated with serving in the department.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the commitment involved.
Those who wish to move forward after the meeting will be provided with the necessary information and means to begin the application process.
