Christopher Sanchez – Fire & EMS

When did you become a volunteer & when did you decide to join Arcola (if different)?
I joined Sterling Rescue in 1989. I transferred to Arcola in 1995 because they needed help and the station was a few miles from my house at that time.

Why did you become a volunteer & Why did you join Arcola?
To pay back to the system after helping me with a motor vehicle collision I was involved in 1988. I was a high school student in my first year volunteering as well.

What positions in the department have you held? What have you learned from them?
Probationary Firefighter/EMT through assistant fire chief. I learned a tremendous amount of experience through the first years that I quit my job and became a career FF as well.

With which committees or projects have you been involved, and what have you learned from them?
I have been on the board of directors and have been on fundraising committees. Fundraising back then included dinners, dances, auctions, turkey shoots, etc.

Were you mentored? Have you been a mentor? If so, tell us about that experience.
I had several senior members share their skills and experiences with me which has helped me make the decisions now as a captain.

What was/is your “day job”?

ASE Master automotive technician, now a Career Fire Captain

How do you feel your service has enriched your life/your family’s life?
Pride, I have pride and my family has an understanding of the sacrifices made.

What would you say to someone today who is interested in joining the fire and rescue service? Would you advise them to join Arcola and Why?

The experience is very rewarding and you get a lifetime of memories and friendships.
