Tucker Smith – Assistant Rescue Chief

When did you become a volunteer?  Why did you join Arcola?

I was voted into Arcola, February of 2016. I was persuaded by my best friend to join. I witnessed the camaraderie that he was experiencing and needed something in my life similar.

What positions in the department have you held?   What have you learned from them?

I have been in support services as a general person.  I took EMT class outside the station and then challenged the county.  I have been on the BOD as a Secretary and now as the Assistant Rescue Chief.

Were you mentored?  Have you been a mentor?  

I have taught CPR to many members and also mentored junior members and new members with a lot of success.

What was/is your “day job”?

I work as a proposal manager for a large government contractor.

What community involvement do you have outside the department?

I was a CERT member for Fairfax County.  I was also on the advisory executive board for the Loudoun County MRC a part of the Health Department.   I was also a medic for the Fairfax World Fire and Rescue Games.

How do you feel your service has enriched your life/your family’s life?

The station has provided me an avenue to develop and cultivate new friends.  It has also provided me an opportunity to continue as a life-long learner.

What would you say to someone today who is interested in joining the fire and rescue service? Would you advise them to join Arcola and Why?

It can be frustrating at times but in the long run, it will provide you with a sense of fulfillment.
